CARVER COMMONS

Carver Commons brings a full service grocery store and a branch bank to an area of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard that is described as a “food desert” by public health professionals.  The project began with the demolition of the Carver state Bank and parking lot to make way for a Food Lion grocery store with fresh fruit and vegetables as well as a full service deli.  The bank, grocery store and the adjacent St. Philip AME Church will share parking facilities in a classic urban win-win-win-proposition.  We created the exterior expression for the building as a remembrance of the old movie theatre that once occupied the site, an icon for Savannah’s African-American community.
