Nothing built in the past hundred years has transformed Savannah as much as the mile long pedestrian oriented River Street, Rousakis Plaza and Savannah River walk. What once was a mud street with open sewers and rotten wharves, was remade into the place to see and be seen by Savannah’s citizens and visitors from around the world. The 1973 master plan, by Bob Gunn and Eric Meyerhoff, was designed, with technical help from David Olliff, still with Gunn Meyerhoff Shay today, and constructed by the Summer of 1977, at a cost of $7,330,000, or about $30,000,000 in currency today. Now, over 10,000,000 visitors walk on River Street every year. Gunn Meyerhoff Shay continues to this day making places that seem as though they have always existed.
