Located in the heart of Savannah’s historic Cuyler-Brownsville neighborhood, Heritage Place Apartments embodies the intersection of preservation, revitalization, and community. The development includes the historic Charity Hospital and Florance Street School—two landmark structures that, together with two contemporary apartment buildings and a community center, form a vital hub of affordable housing.
Originally adapted into multi-family residences by Mercy Housing two decades ago, these buildings have long served as a cornerstone for the neighborhood’s residents. Today, GMSHAY, in partnership with Mercy Housing, is leading a comprehensive historic preservation and renovation effort funded through Low-Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC). The project restores and modernizes 76 apartment homes and community spaces, blending energy-efficient upgrades with the architectural character that defines the area.
Heritage Place stands as a symbol of progress rooted in history—honoring the legacy of Cuyler-Brownsville, one of Savannah’s first African American neighborhoods, while creating a sustainable and vibrant future for generations to come.
